PERTH INTERNET OF THINGS COMMUNICATIONS NETWORK

FUTURE-PROOF YOURSELF AND YOUR COMMUNITY

We are building and operating an open, decentralised & free Internet of Things communications network.
It is enabling Perth to innovate, learn and demonstrate the value of Internet of Things

INTERNET OF THINGS CONNECTIVITY AND EXPERIENTIAL LEARNING

BY THE COMMUNITY FOR THE COMMUNITY

Free-to-use long range low power IoT wireless network and hands-on training

for anyone in across the Perth community

The Perth Internet of Things Communications Network (PIOTCN) project was launched in May 2017 and ran for 5 months to deliver two main outcomes.

1) A free-to-use wireless LoRaWAN network that covers a large area of the Perth metropolitan area. Network configuration and operation managed by community volunteers made up of individuals, companies and city councils.

2) IoT Experiential Learning, including hands on training and access to community experts to coach, inspire and help individuals lean and teach others.

Help expand the network:

The PIOTCN project is complete, but the network is continually growing. If there is a lack of coverage in your area and you're willing to contribute as a community volunteer please get in touch and we can help you acquire a LoRa Wireless Gateway to suit your needs (circa $180 - $2500). We ask that you review the Memorandum of Understanding and contact sponsors@PIoTCN.org

Note, an externally hosted LoRa gateway with high hosting point can reach over 10km and service 1000's of IoT devices.

Replay the project journey:

Our community project was transformational. Our founder set out with no money, no resources, no business premises, no staff, and no skills to build and operate free-to-use telecommunications infrastructure and inspire the community not to fear job displacement and surveillance, but to experience the technology and shift their mindset to "what could I do with awareness of events in or around you and the ability to predict and intervene events of your choice".

All presentations and project work products are published for re-use by others. From the original Expressions of Interest to our IoT Use-Case Ideation Session. Follow The Journey Here

LoRaWAN

We're a local community of The Things Network

With a coordinated effort, our community volunteers have extend the immensely successful Things Network across the broader Perth metropolitan area for free IoT Internet access coverage.

The Things Network is a global Internet of Things data network built on the collaborative effort of over 20,000 people over 89 countries building a global Internet of Things data network.

We use a long range and low power radio frequency protocol called LoRaWAN and for short range Bluetooth 4.2.

The technology allows for things to talk to the internet without 3G/4G or WiFi. So no WiFi codes and no mobile subscriptions.

Mindset

Future proof your mindset

The World Economic Forum defines the Fourth Industrial Revolution as a technological revolution that will fundamentally alter the way we live, work, and relate to one another. In its scale, scope, and complexity, the transformation will be unlike anything humankind has experienced before.

Perth is not immune. We have basic skillsets, datasets and toolsets available to us, but we lack the mindset. Our project vision addresses that by lowering the barrier for the future workforce of Western Australia to learn through experience with emerging technologies such as IoT.

The value of IoT is that it facilitates the ability for humans to:

1)     understand and control the physical world from within our bodies to outer space.

2)     anticipate and intercept, with known certainty, future events before they happen.
